Food Bank Federal Funding Cut: Hunger Cuts Deep
“Funding for the national Emergency Food and Shelter Program program was cut 40 percent by Congress in this year’s budget – from $200 million to $120 million.
For the first time in the program’s 28-year existence, San Francisco won’t get any of that money.
The San Francisco Food Bank is losing $161,000, enough to pay for 483,000 meals this year.
The cuts come as the San Francisco Food Bank is already seeing increased demand because of lingering economic problems. It fed 225,000 people in the fiscal year 2010-11, up from 132,000 in 2007-08. Its food pantry lines are expected to grow even longer because of the state’s cuts to CalWORKS, which provides cash assistance to low-income families, and a host of other social service programs on the chopping block at the state and federal levels.”
The article in the Chron doesn’t say in what bill the cuts were made, so we can’t look at who vote, and who to send the misery to. Perhaps a perpetual food bank on the steps of Congress would help open a few Congressional eyes, the doors to the soul it is said, so the wanderer might come home.

THE CUTS TO FOOD BANK FUNDS ARE AN ATROCITY. IF CUTS NEED TO BE MADE THEY SHOULD BE TO FOREIGN AID NOT TO PROGRAMS THAT TAKE CARE OF OUR OWN. WHAT THE FEDERALS ARE SAYING IS THAT WE OWE IT TO THE WORLD TO TAKE CARE OF THEM BUT NOT OUR OWN.. WHO EVER CONJURED UP THIS SLAP IN THE FACE TO THE POOR, ELDERLY, DISABLED, UNEMPLOYED AND HUNGRY HERE AT HOME HAS OBVIOUSLY NEVER BEEN HUNGRY, UNEMPLOYED, HOMELESS AND DESPERATE A DAY IN THEIR USELESS LIVES. TAKE CARE OF OUR OWN FIRST.
