About us

The Ruth Group is an exercise group.

We practice the exercise of democracy.

This site was begun in 2003 in the run-up to the Bush invasion of Iraq, as part of a group effort by 50 -200 folks from Marin county.

As a loosely related community of sentiment we have tried to create ways of responding to the larger issues of the world that threaten to overwhelm us as individuals. Though there is no drafted and signed mission statement or 10 commandments to which we adhere we generally believe in participation and responsibility in the world. Many of us find value and precepts for action in Gandhi, King, in various strands of Buddhism and Christianity. Others are radical sceptics, science struck and Kropotkinist “mutual aiders.” Lack of ideological fidelity and acknowledgment of human frailty characterizes us all.

We chartered buses for early marches against the war, lined high-traffic roads with “Burma-Shave” signs against the war. We have sponsored speakers on political and social topics, from the war to the environment, from the media to conscientious objectors.

Speakers have included David Harris, one of our own; George Lakoff on Framing Issues; Michael Shellenberger – on his Apollo Alliance ; Orville Schell – on Why the Media blew it, Robert Reich and many others.

Folks who associate themselves with the Ruth Group are also active in local Democratic politics and activist groups of all kinds.

The blog is maintained for the most part by three guys, Will Kirkland and Bob Meyer in Corte Madera and Bob Zuber in New York City. We encourage comments, e-mail, participation in the on-going dialog. If you have skills or interests let us know at info@ruthgroup.org
