Knock Me Over with a Feather

Well if the Times Ain’t a Changin’ I don’t know what it means. The Grotesque Opposition Party has just elected an African American to be its Chair. So now, a mere 45 years since John Lewis was almost beaten to death for daring to insist that a black man could walk the streets, eat in public places, send his kids to a decent school, smile at a white neighbor and vote, we have black men heading both the Democratic and Republican parties.

Michael Steele,
first black Lieutenant Governor (and first Republican as well), won the chair of the RNC after jousting with many others, including Chip Saltsman, one of the first to drop out, the bozo who thought “Barack The Magic Negro” was a fine ditty to send out as campaign material….

Of course, as equality is granted, it is granted to all kinds of characters. Steele hopes to reach out to other closet Republicans of color but it is likely to take more than a pretty face to bring them in. He is, despite his occasional waffling, a Republican. Here’s a few quick points.

“Steele compared stem cell research to Nazi experiments during the Holocaust.”

“Steele was endorsed by Mike Tyson during his run for Senate. When Tyson, who used to be married to Steele’s half sister, pleaded no contest to assault in Montgomery County in 1998, Steele was on hand to support him.”

“Steele defended former Gov. Bob Ehrlich’s decision to hold a $100,000 fundraiser at a country club that did not allow non-white members, saying that the club’s membership’s policies were “not an issue” because “I don’t play golf.”

Finally, a reader points out that Steele failed in his only attempt to pass the Maryland Bar exam. “This is a joke,” the reader wrote, “isn’t it? Michael (can’t pass bar exam) Steele, about to become RNC chairman?”

So read up on the new guy in town and see what you make of it all.

Here’s BET’s blog on the matter.

And here’s The Root.
