Post Card from Pombo Hunting

Filed under: California | Environment | FrontPage — by PostCards @ 9:18 am

Will,

Thought you’d like to know. As a rep of the Golden Gate Audubon Society, I went out to Pleasanton last Sat. to canvas for McCloskey v. Pombo. There were some people from all over the country there, and a ton from around here. The Defenders of Wildlife guy (from NC) who picked me up at the BART station said so many had shown up, they were running out of literature.

He dropped me off on as typical looking an East Bay suburban street as you could imagine, with little lawns and not a few American Flags. But the people who answered their doors were
1. mostly unaware of who the hell Pombo is, their Repub Rep in Congers
2. and quite interested in my recital of Pombo’s envirocrimes and entirely unhostile when I urged them to vote for McCloskey in the primaries if they were Repubs, or if not, to tell their Repub friends to do so.

And these were what I imagine would be called “Red State” people.

Thanks again for your interest in this Pombo affair. That makes you a fellow rat-hunter.

Dan Richman

Words for Acts

Peace awakens, finds her breath.
Sighs, and must remember death.
Beloved peace, be tender now;
Teach to us, your children, how
Gently to renew the life
That we have silenced with our strife.
